Sport

Plays an important role in the lives of young people

Sport plays an important role in the lives of young people and is part of a well rounded education, helping students to gain social, physical, and emotional skills. Whangamata Area School and the community of Whangamata are committed to offering a variety of quality opportunities to our young people. We offer a range of sports at school and enjoy positive relationships with a number of local clubs who facilitate sport in the community. Sport opportunities are advertised to students through the daily notices in class, the school Facebook Page and the school newsletter. If you would like to know more about extra-curricular sport at Whangamata Area School please contact - Jennifer Taylor, Director of Sport, Whangamata Area School - This email address is being protected from spambots. Gymnasium Facilities

Whangamata Area School Gymnasium functions as the hub for indoor sports within our school and the wider community. The gym is equipped for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and gymnastics. It also features a weight and resistance training space.

The gymnasium is also the hub of the school for events such as full school assemblies, visiting speakers and performance groups. In addition to the gym, we have a stunning new astro turf area; facilitating tennis, netball, hockey, futsal and a range of other activities.

The Year 12 and 13 Outdoor Education classes also make use of the local BodyWork Gym as part of their classroom programme (see pictured).

Mountain Biking

With the development of the Whangamata Ridges mountain bike park on our doorstep, we have an amazing opportunity to deepen the connection to our local environment.

The Senior Ride Programme (Yr 7-13) rides every Monday. Riding the trails with a bit of friendly adult support, this group has a real focus on fitness and skill development.

The Junior Ride Programme (Yr 2-8) rides every Thursday. Riding the trails with alot of friendly adult support, the students will pick up some new skills, meet like-minded kids, and have some fun along the way.
