About

Whangamata
Area School
The Benefits of
our Area School
-
Cohesion & Stability
Continuity in education avoiding the disruption of starting new schools at intermediate and secondary levels. -
Leadership
Significant leadership opportunities for senior students and confidence building relationships for juniors. -
Small Class Sizes
A small senior school giving our students the chance to construct 'tailor made' courses, with close and full support. -
Highly professional staff
Staff across all school levels support learning success. Our individual student achievements and NCEA results reflect this. -
Opportunities For All
Our younger year 1-6 students have access to specialist facilities and staff that are usually only available for secondary students.
-
Positive Learning Spaces
Specialist teaching areas provide purpose built amenities and create a positive learning environment for our students.
Local Environment
Whangamata is a beautiful coastal town with approximately 4 kilometres of surf beach bordered by tidal estuaries. A range of outdoor activities are available to enjoy whether it be surfing on the famous bar, kayaking or snorkelling in the harbour, or fishing off the wharf. All of these activities are woven into the curriculum our students experience.

Our Vision
Creating connected, engaged lifelong learners through positive, productive partnerships and authentic learning experiences

Our Mission

Our Values
Manaakitanga means to ‘uplift and foster mana’. Particularly, the mana of a person expresses itself in their ability to do certain things, in their skills and talents. Manaakitanga is a value or a principle which is concerned with the uplifting, fostering and nurturing the mana of the person.
Whanaungatanga is a term for interconnectedness and relatedness. Whanaungatanga is a value about maintaining and fostering relationships. It is about making good connections between people and between people and our world. It is about understanding that we are all interconnected in some way and one’s thoughts and actions connect with other things.

Social Media
Through a positive home school partnership our students will be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners. Through utilising the internet, we are able to communicate with our students, their immediate families and their family from further afield. We can share their successes, their sport, special events and their work.
Whangamata Area School has a Facebook page where we post information regularly for students and their families. We have found Facebook to be the most used social media site in our town and community.
Our Gateway and Careers Department also have their own Careers Facebook page that they update regularly with information to support our Senior Student's transition into the workforce.
Some of our junior classes have private class groups where the teacher and parents can interact. Your child's class teacher will give you information on how to join if they have a page. We keep these as 'secret' groups for privacy reasons. Parents have reported this to be a great way to see what is going on in class. The teacher is able to share photos, videos and work in progress. Some pages have family from overseas following, which is a fantastic way for grandparents and other family to keep up with children living abroad!
